About us

The Centre for Security Studies (CSS), at the Krakow University of Economics (KUE), is a multidisciplinary platform of international researchers focused on the types of emerging security threats and economic challenges which could negatively impact peace and stability in Central and Eastern (CE) Europe.

The geographical centre of Europe is one of several flashpoints worldwide, along with areas of Africa, the Arctic, Korean Peninsula and the Middle East. These regions are considered in varying degrees as comparatively more high-risk for potential conflict due to, for example, growing political and economic tensions, territorial disputes, access to resources and increased military activity.

The effects of international armed conflicts can be rapidly transmitted to other areas of the globe and can lead to increased national and regional instability through several channels, including disruptions to trade, energy and production, but may also cause refugee flows, the spread of terrorism – including state sponsored, cyber-attacks on critical infrastructure and other forms of grey-zone warfare, along the hybrid spectrum between peace and conflict.

Members of CSS focus on the main drivers of instability and conflict with a view to developing strategic areas of research, related courses and seminar meetings.
